Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the United States is a rapper and actress. Queen Latifah's career in music film and television has resulted in her receiving the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita, a instructor at Irvington High School. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of ten. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic school within Newark New Jersey. At the age of 8, her cousin gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah which translates to gentle and loving in Arabic. Latifah is a very tall 5'10 girl who was on the high school basketball squad. She sang the song"Home" from The musical The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her career in beatboxing. Latifah was among the members of the original form of Flavor Unit which at that time was a crew of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created an example of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the track. The singer signed Latifah and then released her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
